Vivienne was all smiles when Gwen and Mary returned carrying bags of shopping for the late lunch they would have when they arrived on the beach, which Mary insisted wasnât very far away. Gwen typed the postcode into the satnav and they began the journey out of Lynmouth with the air conditioning on full and Gwenâs CD of Thomas Tallisâs Spem in Alium blaring. Mary was still thinking about being inside the church, her quiet prayers and her time of reflection, so she muttered, âAh, anyone outside would think we were a vanload of blessed monks.â
Gwen smiled. âI love Thomas Tallis.â
âItâs very restful and uplifting, the harmonies and the choral singing.â Vivienne closed her eyes and let the music drift over her. She exhaled slowly; she had come to a decision. Sheâd enjoy the holiday with Gwen and Mary and then, when she was back in London, sheâd go and see Lennie, talk things through with him, show some humility and kindness. Sheâd play it by ear: he might ask her if they could try again, and sheâd consider it seriously now. But perhaps heâd already met a co-star on set while he was filming in the north. Perhaps heâd fallen in love with someone else. If that happened, Vivienne would wish him the best, with no feelings of jealousy. Sheâd stop acting like a spoilt prima donna from this moment forth. Sheâd make amends.
Gwen peered over her glasses as she drove along the main road. Mary and Vivienne were unusually quiet, so she concentrated on the bending roads and driving carefully. There was a great deal of traffic and it was quite humid inside the cab. From the lofty position of her seat, Gwen could see the expanse of blue ocean stretching like a turquoise ribbon below to the left, glistening in the sunlight. Beside her, Mary was silent: Gwen expected her to chortle about the view of the sea and wave her arms like an excited child, but her eyes were closed, shaded by sunglasses. Vivienne in the passenger seat behind was sleepy too. Gwen assumed it was still the effects of the wine sheâd drunk last night. Gwen was glad of the sweet choral music that filled the cab and made her spirits soar; she sang along, her voice trilling on the high notes. After twenty minutes or so, she realised she felt quite hungry and was looking forward to sharing a picnic lunch on the pretty beach Mary had found.
Gwen peered in the driverâs mirror; behind her, Vivienne had fallen asleep, her head lolling to one side, a magazine perched on the edge of her on her lap. Mary, next to Gwen, had her mouth open and was making little snorting sounds. Gwen smiled. The road sign on the bend in front of her announced that she was approaching Porlock Hill, and that it was steep. Gwen paid little attention: she would be all right going downhill; she had good brakes. In front of her, an old Transit van was chugging slowly, belching out black smoke.
